You may be surprised to know I learned how to make Korean BBQ before I could really cook anything else.

When I was 11, my mom and I moved in with my "aunt" who is 100% Korean. My mom was never much of a cook, so for the 5+ years I spent living with her, she taught me the ins and outs of cooking her way.

There would always be a pot of steamed rice on the counter when I got home from school. I would grab my seaweed snacks, my bowl of rice, and drizzle some sesame oil and soy sauce all over it and make seaweed wraps as my after school snack.

She also introduced me to many other snacks and meals that didn't totally stick. She would try to get me to eat her freeze-dried baby shrimp and crunchy sardine snacks, but after a few attempts, those never became my "go-to's."

Korean BBQ was a staple in our household and we ate it constantly and I learned to perfect the recipe when I was in high school. I learned to make all the sides and the staples to go with it. It became my favorite food that I craved on any occasion.

When you think of Korean BBQ, simple isn't what typically comes to mind, but I assure, you, it can be.

What you'll need:

Korean beef short ribs, cut at 1/4" thick. You can also use thinly cut bulgogi meat if you'd like the thin meat rather than ribs. I've also used chicken breasts and they were phenomenal! I purchased 2 lbs.

2 cups soy sauce

1 cup brown or white sugar (I prefer brown, but you can mix them too)

2 tbs sesame oil

5-6 cloves of garlic, minced. I like a lot of garlic so feel free to adjust.

1/2 inch of a fresh ginger root, grated

1 green onion, chopped

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp red pepper (I was out of the ground so I used flakes)

1/4 tsp sesame seeds
